Umrah Guide
Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage, is a spiritual journey to Makkah that can be undertaken at any time of the year, unlike Hajj, which has specific dates. Although it is not obligatory, it holds great significance and rewards in Islam. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you understand and prepare for Umrah:
Preparation for Umrah
Spiritual Preparation
Intention (Niyyah): Begin with a sincere intention to perform Umrah solely for the sake of Allah.
Repentance: Seek forgiveness from Allah and make amends with others.
Knowledge: Study the rituals of Umrah and familiarize yourself with their significance.
Physical and financial preparation
Health: Undergo a medical check-up and ensure you are in good health.
Vaccinations: Ensure you are vaccinated, including any recommended or required vaccines.
Finances: Ensure you have enough savings for the trip without causing financial hardship to your family.
Essential Items for Umrah
Ihram garments: two white, unsewn cloths for men; a modest dress for women.
Personal hygiene items: unscented soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.
Medication: any prescribed medications and basic first aid supplies.
Travel documents: passport, visa, tickets, and other essential documents.
Comfort items: comfortable walking shoes, a small backpack, and a water bottle.
Umrah Rituals
Before Umrah
Ihram: Enter into the state of Ihram from the Miqat (designated stations for assuming Ihram) by performing Ghusl (ritual purification), wearing the Ihram garments, and making the intention for Umrah. Men wear two white clothes, while women wear modest clothing.
During Umrah
Talbiyah: After making the intention, recite the Talbiyah: “Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka Laa Shareeka Laka Labbayk, Innal Hamda Wan-Ni’mata Laka Wal-Mulk, Laa Shareeka Lak.”
Tawaf: Upon arrival in Makkah, proceed to the Masjid al-Haram and perform Tawaf around the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction, starting from the Black Stone. Men are encouraged to uncover their right shoulder (Idtiba) during Tawaf.
Two Rak’ahs at Maqam Ibrahim: After Tawaf, pray two Rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible, then drink Zamzam water.
Sa’i between Safa and Marwah: Perform Sa’i, which involves walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah. Start at Safa and end at Marwah. Men should jog between the green markers.
Haircut/Shaving: Men should shave their heads or trim their hair, while women should cut a small portion of their hair (about the length of a fingertip).

Reflect on the experience. Ponder over the spiritual journey and how it has impacted your faith.
Implement changes: Incorporate the lessons learned during Umrah into your daily life.
